FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

If yours isn’t here, write to us. A person reads every message.

Making the book

Do I have to mail you my recipe cards?

No. Your cards never leave your kitchen. You photograph each card with your phone (front, and back if anything is written there) and upload the photos to your private order page.

How many recipes can I include?

Both Keepsake Digital and Keepsake Hardcover include up to 60 recipe cards. Each recipe gets a two-page spread: the photo of the original card on the left and the typed recipe on the right. If you have a bigger recipe box, contact us before you order.

Can I organize the recipes into chapters?

Yes. You can rename, add or remove chapters (Breakfast & Breads, Mains, Desserts, and so on), put each card in a chapter, and drag cards into the order you want. You also choose the book title, the family name on the cover, a dedication, and a cover color.

What if a card is stained, faded, or written in pencil?

Photograph it anyway. The original photo is always printed exactly as it is, stains and all. For the typed version, anything we cannot read with confidence is highlighted for you to check, and anything truly illegible is marked so you can fill it in from memory or leave it out.

Handwriting & AI

Do you use AI to read the handwriting?

Yes. An AI vision model does the first transcription. It is told to copy each card exactly as written, keep the original spelling and abbreviations, never fill in missing words, and flag every word it is unsure of. Then you review every recipe on an online proof, beside the photo of the card, and correct anything before you approve. Nothing is printed until you do.

Will you "fix" Grandma's spelling or measurements?

No. We keep the wording, spelling, abbreviations and measurements the way they were written ("1 c. oleo", "bake in a slow oven"). You can edit anything yourself on the proof if you want to.

Are my photos used to train AI?

No. Your photos are sent to our AI provider only to transcribe your cards, under API terms that do not allow them to be used for training, and we never use them for training ourselves.

Can I try it before I buy?

Yes. The free card decoder transcribes one card photo and shows you exactly which words it was unsure of. No account is needed, and the photo is not stored.

Printing & shipping

What is the printed book like?

An 8.5 × 8.5 inch hardcover with the cover printed directly on the case (no dust jacket), gloss-laminated, with full-color pages on 80# coated white paper so the card photos look their best. It is printed on demand by our print partner, Lulu.

How long does it take?

Your proof is usually ready within 24 hours of uploading. After you approve it, printing and standard US shipping usually take around two weeks, and longer in December. For Christmas, see the order-by date on our gift page.

Can I send copies to other family members?

Yes. Add extra hardcover copies for $65 each, and send each copy to a different US address if you like. You enter the addresses in your order portal before you approve the proof.

Do you ship outside the US?

Not yet. Printed books currently ship to US addresses only. The digital PDF works anywhere.

Privacy

Who can see my photos?

Only you, through your private order link, and our team when we need to help with your order. Photos are stored privately (never on a public link) and are deleted 90 days after your book is delivered.

Orders

What if I find a mistake after I approve?

Before printing, the proof is yours to change as much as you like. Once you approve, the book goes to print and cannot be changed. If something in the printed book does not match the proof you approved, or the book arrives damaged, contact us and we will make it right.

Can I get a refund?

If you change your mind before you submit your card photos, we will refund you in full. After that, we refund any part of the work not yet done. Printed books are made to order, so we cannot refund them once printed, but we will always replace a damaged or misprinted copy.

Their handwriting deserves more than a shoebox.

Photograph the cards this weekend. Review your proof when it suits you. Nothing prints until you say so.
